Our Story

Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) — the All Mising Students' Union — is the apex student organisation of the Mising (Miri) community, one of Assam's largest Scheduled Tribes. Founded on 16 October 1971 at Jonai Higher Secondary School in present-day Dhemaji district, TMPK has been the unified voice of the Mising people for over five decades.

📜

Sixth Schedule Demand

Since 1982, TMPK has led the demand for inclusion of the Mising-dominated areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for full tribal autonomy. A 14-point charter was submitted to the Chief Minister on 5 May 1984 — now observed as annual Demand Day. The demand remains unfulfilled.

🏛️

Mising Autonomous Council

After years of sustained agitation, the Assam Government led by CM Hiteswar Saikia negotiated with TMPK and Mising Mimag Kebang, resulting in the Mising Autonomous Council Act, 1995. The 40-member council with HQ at Gogamukh governs Mising development and cultural affairs across 8 districts.

🌊

Anti-Dam Movement

TMPK was at the forefront of protests against the 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (2007–2011), organising highway blockades on NH-52, mass demonstrations, and memoranda highlighting environmental devastation and displacement risks to Mising villages.

🗣️

Language Rights

TMPK successfully pressed for the introduction of Mising Language Teaching (MLT) in primary schools in 1985 and has worked with Mising Agom Kebang to promote the Roman script, Mising literature, and oral history documentation.

🚑

Flood Relief & Disaster Response

Annual flood-relief operations benefiting thousands across the Brahmaputra valley. In July 2026, TMPK President Tilak Doley met Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan demanding a scientific probe into flash floods caused by large-scale projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

🎓

Golden Jubilee (2021)

TMPK celebrated 50 years of service with a year-long programme inaugurated at the Higher Secondary field, Jonai Bazar, in the presence of Assam ministers and MLAs — a milestone reaffirming five decades of dedication to the Mising community.
