Securing the Mising language

Language is the soul of a community, and TMPK has been a tireless champion of the Mising language. In 1985, the organisation successfully pressed the Government of Assam to introduce Mising Language Teaching (MLT) in primary schools across the Mising belt — a landmark achievement that ensured children could learn in their mother tongue.

Beyond the classroom, TMPK has worked closely with the Mising Agom Kebang, the apex body for the development of the Mising language, to promote the Roman script for written Mising, publish Mising literature, and document the rich oral history and folk traditions of the community.

These efforts have helped preserve a language that is central to Mising identity, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their roots even as they engage with the wider Assamese and Indian mainstream.
