A 40-year fight for tribal autonomy

Since 1982, Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) has been the principal organisation championing the inclusion of the Mising-inhabited areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The Sixth Schedule provides autonomous district councils with legislative, executive and judicial powers over tribal areas — a status the Mising people have long demanded for self-governance, preservation of language and culture, and control over land and resources.

The movement reached a historic moment when a 14-point charter of demands was submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam on 5 May 1984. That date has since been observed every year as Demand Day, with rallies, memoranda and public meetings held across the Mising belt to keep the demand alive.

Despite sustained advocacy over four decades, the demand remains unfulfilled. TMPK continues to press the Government of India and the Government of Assam through peaceful democratic means, including mass deputations, memoranda and awareness campaigns, insisting that the constitutional promise of tribal self-governance be extended to the Mising community.
