From agitation to autonomy

The creation of the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) in 1995 was the single biggest political milestone in the history of the Mising people. It was the result of years of sustained agitation, negotiations and patient diplomacy by TMPK working alongside the Mising Mimag Kebang.

The Assam Government, led by Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, engaged seriously with the leadership of TMPK and the Mising Mimag Kebang, and the result was the Mising Autonomous Council Act, 1995. The Act established a 40-member council with its headquarters at Gogamukh, Dhemaji.

The Council governs Mising development and cultural affairs across eight districts of the Brahmaputra valley, covering developmental planning, cultural preservation, and welfare schemes for the Mising community. While TMPK continues to press for Sixth Schedule status, the MAC remains a foundational achievement that institutionalised Mising self-governance.
